This week is Book Week and we celebrated with our entire school by holding a Book Parade. Everyone had so much fun dressing up and celebrating our love of books. For the past 2 terms, 5P have been the winners of the class borrowing award. We absolutely love reading and have our amazing Librarian Miss Campbell to thank for giving us a library that we love to visit and spend time in. Miss Campbell always has the best books to borrow and we think she is the greatest!

This week in class we have been discussing how we best learn in the classroom. Everyone agrees that being an active learner is important. We decided that to be the very best we could we would set ourselves goals for our learning. Using SMART goal setting everyone made a short and long term goal. Our short term goals will help us with individual areas that we know we need a little more help with. Everyone will meet with Mrs Parrello to decide how we can achieve the goals we have each set. We decided to write our goals on to paper that we then folded and pinned onto hands that we decorated. We will determine whether we have achieved our short term goals at the end of this term. Of course our long term goals will take us a litle longer!
Today we had an invitation from Mrs McSpeerin to visit her as she had an important job for us. The carpet in the admin block needs replacing and we had the job of measuring each of the offices and providing Mrs McSpeerin with a quote for new carpet. So, with tape measures in hand, we headed off to do our first quote. We discovered that actually measuring a room was a lot trickier than simply calculating the area of a room on a piece of paper. This term, in maths, we have been learning how to calculate the area of surfaces. Today we had the opportunity to design our own dream home. We had great fun deciding on the different types of rooms we would have in our home if anything was possible. Our ideas ranged from movie theatres, arcades and indoor pools, to rooms for our pets and bowling alleys. Mrs Parrello decided she would love a library to keep all of her books in. After we had designed our home we had to calculate the area of each of the rooms. Then we looked at some brochures on carpet, tiles and timber flooring and determined how much flooring would cost for each room in our dream house. Mrs Parrello hopes we all continue to work hard at school so that we will be able to achieve a job that pays a very high income! Today we were lucky enough to visit Healthy Harold at the Life Education Centre. Each year that we attend the centre we learn about a new topic. This year we focussed on the terrible effects of smoking. Our class time travelled with detective Mac McHardy and his sidekick Conan to explore the facts and effects of smoking on our bodies. We would like to say a big thank you to our presenter Janet, who was just awesome! Learning with Harold is always an exciting and hands-on adventure that we are so lucky to experience. Parents, if you would like to learn more about the information that we discussed today please visit http://www.lifeeducation.org.au/ There is also a free app for mobile devices called 'The Smoky Case' that is available to download. |
