Today we had an invitation from Mrs McSpeerin to visit her as she had an important job for us. The carpet in the admin block needs replacing and we had the job of measuring each of the offices and providing Mrs McSpeerin with a quote for new carpet. So, with tape measures in hand, we headed off to do our first quote. We discovered that actually measuring a room was a lot trickier than simply calculating the area of a room on a piece of paper.
This term, in maths, we have been learning how to calculate the area of surfaces. Today we had the opportunity to design our own dream home. We had great fun deciding on the different types of rooms we would have in our home if anything was possible. Our ideas ranged from movie theatres, arcades and indoor pools, to rooms for our pets and bowling alleys. Mrs Parrello decided she would love a library to keep all of her books in. After we had designed our home we had to calculate the area of each of the rooms. Then we looked at some brochures on carpet, tiles and timber flooring and determined how much flooring would cost for each room in our dream house. Mrs Parrello hopes we all continue to work hard at school so that we will be able to achieve a job that pays a very high income! Math activities are a regular part of our day in 5P. One of our favourite activities are our problem solving cards that we work together in small groups to solve. We have been learning how to tackle problems with a variety of strategies. The first strategy that we learnt was to draw a diagram. Drawing a picture of a math problem is a great way to help find the answer. This week we have changed strategies and have been learning how to create a table to solve math problems. Most of us really like this strategy, though, determining what type of table to draw can be a little tricky. Mrs Parrello is really impressed at our ability to continue working on problems even when we are faced with a real challenge. 5P are definitely becoming resilient learners! |
