Thank you Mr Tangye, we always learn so much during our lessons with you!
Today in Culture Class, Mr Tangye showed us how to make shelters from natural products in our own school environment. We were able to make our own shelters from sticks, paper bark and lomandra. Mr Tangye explained to us the difference between a summer shelter and a winter shelter. In groups, we built a small version of what we thought the shelter would look like. One group even added a front door to their shelter using a bundle of soft leaves. Thank you Mr Tangye, we always learn so much during our lessons with you!

All schools in NSW are currently developing their new School Plans and directions for 2015 and the next 3 year time frame. As part of this process we are looking at what is important to us at Norths. This includes our motto, 'Work Earnestly, Live Honestly', and our school vision, 'A community with Expectations of Achievements and Success'. We are seeking the opinions of our staff, students and parents to ensure we can provide the best education for our students for years to come. We have developed an online survey to collect the thoughts and ideas from all members of our school community. No names are required. Essentially, the school is trying to find information in the following areas:
Below is the survey that you may wish to complete. The students of 5P will be discussing their hopes and dreams for our school's future as well. We look forward to letting you know what they are. Thank you for your assistance in planning the future of our school. Together we can make St Marys North even better! Last week we had the amazing opportunity to go on our very first over night camp. We were all so excited ... our parents were as well! We headed off early on Wednesday morning to catch a ferry to Milson Island Sport and Recreation Centre. Milson Island had so many fun things for us to do. Most of the activities were new to us all and some of us had to conquer a few fears before we could have a go at the fun. We had a go at kayaking, archery, fencing, raft building, a ropes challenge course and the amazing giant swing. On our first night we played games in the enormous Rec Hall and on the second night we had a disco outside! Each of us had a turn in the dining hall at either serving the meals, sweeping the floors, washing the dishes (which proved to be a lot of fun) or packing up the hall at the end of the meal. There was so much food on offer and we were allowed to eat as much as we could fit in. The lucky teachers got to sit outside on the deck and enjoy the amazing views. Everyone at Milson Island were so friendly. We made friends with some other kids from another school who were staying on the island as well. Friday came too quickly and we eventually had to leave to board the ferry for home. Have a look at the 2 videos below to see some of the fun things that we got up to on camp. This week we were lucky enough to visit our local high school as part of our transition lessons. Transitioning to high school can be a daunting process, so we thought we would take our first visit and enjoy some of the really fun activities available in high school. Mr Fletcher visits with us regularly and we always have fun in his PE lessons. On Tuesday he gave us the amazing opportunity to have a go at archery. It was so much fun! Many of us hit the targets and came close to the bullseye. After archery we took a visit to the ag plot. We fed the animals and one of us even got a kiss from the cow! A huge thank you to Mr Fletcher for showing us around. We can't wait for our next visit. This week is Book Week and we celebrated with our entire school by holding a Book Parade. Everyone had so much fun dressing up and celebrating our love of books. For the past 2 terms, 5P have been the winners of the class borrowing award. We absolutely love reading and have our amazing Librarian Miss Campbell to thank for giving us a library that we love to visit and spend time in. Miss Campbell always has the best books to borrow and we think she is the greatest! This week in class we have been discussing how we best learn in the classroom. Everyone agrees that being an active learner is important. We decided that to be the very best we could we would set ourselves goals for our learning. Using SMART goal setting everyone made a short and long term goal. Our short term goals will help us with individual areas that we know we need a little more help with. Everyone will meet with Mrs Parrello to decide how we can achieve the goals we have each set. We decided to write our goals on to paper that we then folded and pinned onto hands that we decorated. We will determine whether we have achieved our short term goals at the end of this term. Of course our long term goals will take us a litle longer!
Today we had an invitation from Mrs McSpeerin to visit her as she had an important job for us. The carpet in the admin block needs replacing and we had the job of measuring each of the offices and providing Mrs McSpeerin with a quote for new carpet. So, with tape measures in hand, we headed off to do our first quote. We discovered that actually measuring a room was a lot trickier than simply calculating the area of a room on a piece of paper. This term, in maths, we have been learning how to calculate the area of surfaces. Today we had the opportunity to design our own dream home. We had great fun deciding on the different types of rooms we would have in our home if anything was possible. Our ideas ranged from movie theatres, arcades and indoor pools, to rooms for our pets and bowling alleys. Mrs Parrello decided she would love a library to keep all of her books in. After we had designed our home we had to calculate the area of each of the rooms. Then we looked at some brochures on carpet, tiles and timber flooring and determined how much flooring would cost for each room in our dream house. Mrs Parrello hopes we all continue to work hard at school so that we will be able to achieve a job that pays a very high income! Today we were lucky enough to visit Healthy Harold at the Life Education Centre. Each year that we attend the centre we learn about a new topic. This year we focussed on the terrible effects of smoking. Our class time travelled with detective Mac McHardy and his sidekick Conan to explore the facts and effects of smoking on our bodies. We would like to say a big thank you to our presenter Janet, who was just awesome! Learning with Harold is always an exciting and hands-on adventure that we are so lucky to experience. Parents, if you would like to learn more about the information that we discussed today please visit http://www.lifeeducation.org.au/ There is also a free app for mobile devices called 'The Smoky Case' that is available to download. Today 5P visited the CARES bike safety centre. Constable Pritchard showed us how to stay safe on the road both as a pedestrian and cyclist. The students were shown how to correctly fit their helmet and the many reasons why they must never ride without one on. Everyone was issued with their own licence that had 12 points. Thankfully we all completed the day with our licence, though some of us were very close to losing theirs! Rebekah impressed constable Pritchard so much with her riding skills and answers to his questions that she was presented with her very own helmet at the end of the day. Congratulations Rebekah! A wonderful day was had by all and we would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Du Ross-Smith and Mrs Ferguson for spending the day with us. |
